If I listen carefully, I hear the echoes of my parents. When I'm quieter still, I can
hear back another generation.
The work you see in Echoes is the result of a personal archeological dig, the
excavation of my family's history. I use reconstructed family photographs as
a background to my work, then paint, scrape and obscure portions of the image to reveal a
fresh view of those individuals behind the paint. In seeking to understand the formation
of their characters, I, in turn, find clues to my own character. These visual echoes remind
me of where I came from.
The resulting images mirror the way memories are stored in my head. Some are very clear, while
others stay stubbornly out of reach. While there may be different versions of each event,
each version contributes to the whole, to the memory. The echoes may be faint, but they
are never silent.
